The Basics
What Is a Words to Pages Converter?
A words to pages converter is a page estimation tool that shows how many pages a number of words fills at a chosen font, font size, line spacing, margin width and paper size.
The converter measures the printable area of the page, works out how many characters fit on one line and how many lines fit on one page, and turns that into words per page. Your word count divided by words per page gives the number of pages. The same math runs in reverse: type a page count in the Pages box and it returns the number of words you need.

Keep the default settings, if your assignment lists no format. The default is the format most teachers and editors expect: 12pt Times New Roman, double spacing, 1-inch margins and US Letter paper (8.5" × 11", 21.6 × 27.9 cm). Your settings are saved in the share link, so a classmate or editor opens the same estimate.
The Chart
Words to Pages Conversion Chart (Single vs. Double Spaced)
1,000 words is 1.8 pages single-spaced, 2.7 pages at 1.5 spacing and 3.7 pages double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. Double spacing halves the words per page and doubles the page count.

Both tables recalculate when you change the font, font size, margins or paper in the converter. The figures describe document pages. A printed book holds fewer words per page, so a 200-page or 300-page book holds fewer words than 200 or 300 pages of a Word document.

The Formula
How to Calculate Pages from Word Count
To calculate pages from word count, divide the number of words by the words per page for your format. Multiply the page count by the words per page to go from pages back to words.
Pages = Words ÷ Words per page
Words = Pages × Words per page
Round the result up to the next whole page for printing, since a partial page still uses a full sheet.
Worked examples · 1-inch margins
| Word count | Format | Calculation | Pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 to 600 words | Times New Roman 12pt, double, US Letter | 500 ÷ 273 to 600 ÷ 273 | 1.8 to 2.2 |
| 1,000 words | Times New Roman 12pt, double, A4 | 1,000 ÷ 286 | 3.5 |
| 1,500 words | Arial 11pt, double, US Letter | 1,500 ÷ 289 | 5.2 |
| 2,000 words | Times New Roman 12pt, single, US Letter | 2,000 ÷ 546 | 3.7 |
| 3,000 words | Courier New 12pt, double, US Letter | 3,000 ÷ 191 | 15.7 |
| 5,000 words | Garamond 12pt, single, US Letter | 5,000 ÷ 598 | 8.4 |
Our calculator finds the words per page from 4 measurements. A US Letter page with 1-inch margins leaves a text block 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) wide and 9 inches (22.9 cm) tall. Times New Roman at 12pt averages 5.04 points per character, so a 468-point line holds 93 characters, about 15 words. Double spacing sets each line 27.6 points apart, so the 648-point text block holds 23 lines. 15.2 words per line × 23 lines gives 350 words, and a flow factor of 0.78 for paragraph breaks and short closing lines brings the result to 273 words per page.
Real documents hold fewer words per page than plain body text. Subtract space for 6 common elements before you trust a page count:
- Paragraph indentation overhead: short paragraphs leave more empty line ends.
- Chapter break allowances: each new chapter or section starts on a fresh page.
- Footnote inclusion calculations: footnotes sit in smaller type at the foot of the page and push body text forward.
- Table and figure space: a half-page chart removes about 135 double-spaced words from that page.
- Block quotes and lists: indented text holds fewer words per line.
- Dialogue-heavy scene density: short lines of speech leave white space, and dialogue-heavy fiction runs 10% to 20% below the estimate.

Common Words to Pages Examples
Common words to pages examples fall into 3 groups: everyday documents, printed books and special formats. Each group uses a different page format, so the same word count fills a different number of pages in each.
Everyday documents

Printed books
The average page of a printed book holds 250 to 300 words. A 200-page book holds 50,000 to 60,000 words and a 300-page book holds 75,000 to 90,000 words.
Special formats
Formats with their own page rules.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) caps an R01 Research Strategy at 12 pages, in 11pt or larger with margins of at least 0.5 inch. Arial 11pt single-spaced at 0.5-inch margins holds about 750 words per page, close to 9,000 words before figures.
One screenplay page in 12pt Courier runs about one minute of screen time, so a 100-page script runs close to 100 minutes.
A college-ruled handwritten page holds about 250 words, so a 1,000-word essay fills about 4 handwritten pages.
Narration at 140 words per minute turns 1,000 words into about 7 minutes of audio and a 90,000-word novel into about 10.7 hours.
Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How Many Pages Is 1,000 Words?
1,000 words is 1.8 pages single-spaced or 3.7 pages double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins on US Letter paper.
At 1.5 spacing the same 1,000 words fill 2.7 pages. Round up to 4 pages, if a syllabus asks for a whole number of double-spaced pages.
How Many Pages Is 1,500 to 2,000 Words?
1,500 to 2,000 words is 5.5 to 7.3 pages double-spaced, or 2.7 to 3.7 pages single-spaced, in 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins.
That range covers most college papers of 5 to 7 pages. Arial 11pt fits slightly more text, so the same essay runs about 5.2 to 6.9 double-spaced pages in Arial.
How Many Pages Is 750 to 1,000 Words?
750 to 1,000 words is 2.7 to 3.7 pages double-spaced, or 1.4 to 1.8 pages single-spaced, in 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins.
A standard 3-page paper sits inside this range, which is why teachers often set 750 to 900 words for it.
How Many Words Is 3 to 4 Pages Double Spaced?
3 to 4 double-spaced pages hold 819 to 1,092 words in 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins.
Single-spaced, the same 3 to 4 pages hold 1,638 to 2,184 words. Type the page count into the Pages box to see the figure for any other font or margin.
How Many Words Is a 5-Page Paper?
A 5-page paper is about 1,365 words double-spaced or 2,730 words single-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins.
Most college 5-page assignments expect 1,250 to 1,500 words. A 10-page paper doubles that to about 2,730 double-spaced words.
Does Line Spacing Change the Word Count?
No, line spacing changes the number of pages, not the number of words. Double spacing puts half as many lines on each page, so the same text fills twice as many pages.
1,000 words stays 1,000 words: 1.8 pages single-spaced, 2.7 pages at 1.5 spacing and 3.7 pages double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman.
Why Is My Document Longer Than the Estimate?
Your document runs longer than the estimate when it holds more than plain paragraphs. Headings, block quotes, lists, tables, images and footnotes each add white space that a word count does not show.
Word adds 8pt of space after every paragraph by default, and dialogue-heavy fiction leaves short lines. Both push real pages 10% to 20% past the estimate.
Can I Use This Converter for Microsoft Word and Google Docs?
Yes, the converter works for Microsoft Word and Google Docs documents. Match 4 settings to your document, the font, font size, line spacing and margins, and the estimate follows the app's page count for plain body text.
Google Docs opens new documents in Arial 11pt with 1.15 line spacing and 1-inch margins, about 509 words per page. Microsoft Word for Microsoft 365 opens in Aptos 12pt, and Word 2013 to 2021 open in Calibri 11pt with 1.08 line spacing. Calibri 11pt at 1.15 spacing holds about 507 words per page.
Can I Convert Pages Back to Words?
Yes, you can convert pages back to words in the Pages box. Type a page count, set the line spacing and the Words box shows the number of words.
In 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins, 1 page holds 273 double-spaced words and 10 pages hold 2,730 words. Single-spaced, 1 page holds 546 words and 10 pages hold 5,460 words.
Are Printed Book Pages Different from Document Pages?
Yes, printed book pages hold fewer words than document pages. A single-spaced US Letter page holds about 550 words, and a printed book page holds 250 to 350 words.
Book pages use smaller trim sizes, from 4.25" × 6.87" (10.8 × 17.5 cm) for a mass-market paperback to 6" × 9" (15.2 × 22.9 cm) for a trade paperback, with wider inner margins and more space between lines.
Is the Page Count Exact?
No, the page count is an estimate for plain body text. The estimate lands close to a word processor for continuous prose, and every heading, image, table or short paragraph adds space on top of it.
