About Words to Pages

We build one tool and build it carefully: a words to pages converter that shows its working.

Words to Pages is a free words to pages converter. It tells you how many pages a word count fills, and how many words a page count needs, at the font, font size, line spacing, margins and paper size of your document.

Why we built it

Teachers set essays in pages. Publishers count manuscripts in words. Grant programmes, courts and magazines each set their own limits. Most page estimators answer with a single rule of thumb, 500 words single-spaced and 250 double-spaced, and leave the reader to guess how a different font or margin changes it. Words to Pages replaces the guess with a calculation you can follow.

How the numbers are calculated

Every figure on the site comes from one typographic model:

  1. The paper size minus the margins gives the text block.
  2. The text block width divided by the average character width of the typeface gives characters per line.
  3. The text block height divided by the line height gives lines per page.
  4. Characters per line divided by 6.1 characters per word gives words per line, and a 0.78 flow factor allows for paragraph breaks and short closing lines.

The same model powers the converter, the conversion tables and every guide on the blog, so the numbers on one page never contradict another. In 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins on US Letter paper it gives 546 words per single-spaced page and 273 per double-spaced page.

Privacy by design

The converter runs entirely in your browser. Text you paste is counted on your device and is never uploaded, stored or used to train anything. There are no accounts and no sign-up.
